Body Worn Cameras
The City of Oakdale is in the process of implementing body worn cameras (BWCs) as part of a growing expectation of law enforcement agencies in Minnesota. A committee of Oakdale police officers was created to research and test body worn camera options. Per state law, the City must provide opportunity for public comment and feedback. After the public comment period has ended, the Oakdale City Council will vote to approve use and purchase of body worn cameras in late 2022 with implementation and use expected to begin in early 2023.
As part of state requirements, cities must have a BWC policy. The League of Minnesota Cities has provided a template and resources for creating a city policy. Following the completion of Oakdale's public comment period, the draft policy will be edited, reviewed and finalized before City Council vote and implementation of the system.
